The icon should and will work only if the cdrom is of the same type
Eg, still an IDE device and it is placed in the same location as the
old one, EG, /dev/hdb, now to get it to work again you need to check
and correct a few things.

You did not include the commands you used to mount the device, so all
i can do is make this mail longer than it is really nessacary.

1) Make any changes Eg, the device name /dev/hdb and the mount point
Eg, /cdrom in /etc/fstab.
2) make sure the cdrom icon which is found in /home/$USER/Desktop/
and is called (default name) = cdrom.kdelnk has the correct device
defined. Normally that is /dev/cdrom, check also that the symlink is
correct in /dev, in this instance it will be /dev/hdb -> cdrom

Now i presume you understand that i am giving an example when i say
/dev/hdb make sure you know where its located, dmesg will tell you.
I dont know if caldera crates a file like boot.log which redhat
creates, dmesg has only a small buffer 4k i belive, but it will show
the cdrom's info just after booting.
