You should ONLY use one command first in the shell, that is 'fsck' just
type in those 4 magic letters and the partition to be fsck'd as in;
fsck /dev/hda1 where /dev/hda1 is your root partition number and
answer "y" to any questions fsck asks you.

Then your cd in the drive might not be a bootable cdrom.

Not in console mode, but you may have problems when trying to start X, you
are very vage in your description so noone can really give you acurate
answers.

AFAIK all distributions of linux have bootdisks included on cdroms.
