Hmm..interesting. However I did manage to find a solution to my problems. First
I edited my .config file and added:
CONFIG_RTL8139=m
After that the driver compiled fine and loaded...however it would no longer
work with my DHCP, thats not to big a deal because I have a static IP anyway
and all the information to do a manual setup of it. 

So now I have a working 2.2.14 system that can get on the net and play mp3's
while running in SMP mode (couldn't get the SBLive! drivers to compile with SMP
support befor, thats why I wanted to upgrade the kernel in the first place). So
i'm happy.

Thanks for all your help, it was your suggestions that lead me to solution.
