You really have all the documentation you need to do this on your own
distribution, maybe you did not install the "Extra documentation" to disk
during your install, but thats not a problem as it is on the source medium.
/usr/doc/*HOWTO*/NET-3-4-HOWTO
will start you off with networking. It referances other files to be read as
well.
Kernel upgrading would go as follows.
Obtain the latest kernel source from a linux mirror site near you.
For ease place it in /usr/src
cd /usr/src
rm linux # removes the symlink)
mkdir linux-2.2.14
ln -s linux-2.2.14 linux # relink the sourcedir to linux
tar xzf linux-2.2.14.tar.gz
cd linux/Documentation
less Changes
In the Changes file you will find a list of packages and there version
numbers needed to compile and use that kernel version, it also tells you
HOWTO check for the versions and if your versions dont match it tells you
where to download the versions needed.

I consider buying books tabooe for one reason, Linux is open to anyone at
NO cost, it has README's and HOWTO's on just about every subject you can
think of all free of charge, admittidly some doco's are vauge, but linux
will seem vauge to a MSdos user anyway to start with.
Now considering its all there and FREE, why spend money to buy books when
most is not all the info you need is on your system anyway.
There are also many home pages setup with HOWTOS for spesific drivers and
programs, those URL's are all in the doco's on your system.
For example you have an ethernet card and dont know what to do.
cd to /usr/doc/*HOWTO*/ read the Ethernet-HOWTO you will than see many
named URL's Eg;
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/misc/100mbs.html
Once again far better than buying a book let alone having to read all the
book to understand what they mean.
Anyway those are MY opinions about buying books, others may and possably
will dissagree. Thats thier choose opinions are free just like linux.
