Sounds like you hven't configured your network. Take a look at the output of:
ifconfig -a (to verify that your NIC is both recognized and
assigned an IP address
route -n (to verify that you have both a route to whatever
network the NIC is actually attached to, and a
default gateway to the Internet).
"man route" and "man ifconfig" will tell you more about these commands,
including perhaps enough to let you use them to configure your network
access on your own. If not, come back to us with the actual output of the
above commands and a description of how you WANT your system to be accessing
the Internet.
