Which distro, what kernel version and what is the version of mod-utils used,

This sounds wierd, and possably is the cause of the dump,
depmod -a should be done first on the machine before using modprobe.

You either dont have access to a nameserver or your nameserver is very
sloow.
check /etc/resolv.conf
thats where nameservers are defined and you must of couse have a route to
the nameserver. OR define all known hosts in /etc/hosts.

I doubt that very much, however you make no mention of used versions.
