No. It is basically up to personal preference. Try them all and see
which you are happiest with. Personally I use pine - it does everything I
need, is easy to configure and exists everywhere I try and read mail.
Elm is pretty much dead now AFAICT. mutt does color, and threading, and
extra gubbins that I don't find at all useful, but some people like.

I don't quite understand the question. All of these mailers will work
just fine in X and on the console. If you want to dial up from the
console, then that is also possible - but is not a function of the mailer.
I haven't looked at kppp at all, but my guess would be there's a script
somewhere (/etc/ppp/ppp-on, or something like that, probably) that you can
run which will dial up.
