Hmmm... the only thing in my /etc/ppp/options file is lock and neither system uses a .ppprc file. The funny thing is that pppd isn't dialing the modem, and I think the reason I am getting the below error is that there has not been a connection established before it is trying to negotiate the login to the remote system.
