This is a bit sketchy as descriptions go. I recognize your name, so I know
you've posted in the past ... but I don't have your old messages around to
consult for the details.
So let's look at some things ...
1. The log entries for a recent pppd session, and, for
comparison, the entries from an older, successful
session (if you have them).
2. When pppd is active, the output of
ifconfig -a
route -n
3. For each nameserver listed in /etc/resolv.conf, the
results of "ping a.b.c.d" where a.b.c.d is its
IP address. (Also make sure the nameservers listed
here are the same ones you have on your Win98 and
RH5.2 hosts.) Do this with pppd active, of course.
4. For some of the FQDNs you were unable to connect to,
try "host" on them and see what response you get.
Just to be clear ... in all 3 cases (RH6.1, RH5.2, and Win98), you are
connecting directly to your ISP over ppp? Is this the same machine,
multi-booting, or are they 3 separate hosts?
And ... what program is giving you the message "Connection failed: temporary
name server error". These lines usually have a program name at the
beginning, if they are command-line responses. Is it fetchmail? Or something
else?
And finally ... did you do any sort of system updates just before the
problem started? Even something you would think has nothing to do with
networking?
