Well ... without seeing the "bit" that you edited in lilo.conf, we're not
going to be able to troubleshoot that. So ... assuming you have any access
to the online world (I guess you do; you sent this e-mail), you need to get
some sort of rescur disk.

One way is to go to metalab and get yourself some sort of bootable disk
image, for example from one of the distributions
(ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/distributions/) or from their rescue-disk
arechive (ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/recovery/ ; tomsrtbt is the
popular one). Then use "dd" (on Linux systems) or "rawrite.exe" (on DOS
systems, or in a DOS window under WinXX), or the disk maker that comes with
the appropriate tomsrtbt package (different ones for Linux and DOS) to make
yourself a rescue floppy.

Caldera stuff doesn't seem to be at letalab, and their Web site is
increasingly unhelpful, but you can find their install disks (which probably
work as rescue disks, though I don't actually know) at:
        ftp://ftp.caldera.com/pub/openlinux/current/install-tree/OpenLinux/l
aunch/floppy/

Then boot using your rescue floppy and either mount the hard disk root
filesystem on /mnt, or run the disk so as to make it the actual root
filesystem. Then edit lilo.conf back to what it was and re-run lilo. Or if
you don't know what it was, copy it off and post it so we can help you with
that part.

Doing this will be something of a pain, Ii know, but as you say, "only way
i'll learn!" (in this case learn not to muck with your system unless you
have an emergency boot method in place).
