I don't believe pine supports pop3 (Feel free to correct me, I
don't have it, as Debian doesn't consider it free software).
The normal solution is to use a utitlity such as fetchmail to
get your mail.
The fetchmail homepage is:
http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/fetchmail/
you can grab source, binaries or rpm's
It's pretty easy to set up, but if you hit problems, just
holler.
