Sorry I can't help. I don't really answer "just about every question posted"
on linux-newbie. In particular, I don't answer questions that require
detailed knowledge of Red Hat ... for the simple reason that I don't run Red
Hat (I'm a Debian user, mainly, with a small bit of Slackware and a few of
the tiny distributions -- LRP, Monkey, tomsrtbt -- thrown in).
As a general rule, the setup files run during the boot/init process are kept
in a directory called init.d . Its location varies from distribution to
distribution -- I *think* RH puts it in /sbin/rc.d/init.d . Which files
actually run are governed by the default runlevel (set in /etc/inittab).
There will be a set of directories called rc*.d (where * gets replaced by
the runlevel) containing symlinks to the actual init.d scripts.
Various apps use their own setup files as well. These vary by app; there is
no concise summary I know of (and here too, the locations, and occasionally
the names, will vary by distribution and version - by kernel version too,
sometimes). As a genreal rule, get familiar with the files in /etc and its
subdirectories -- not all, but most common config files are there.
Personally I don't like GUI tools like linuxconf much either. They are fine
when they work, but they tend to leave you high and dry when they don't. I
just don't know any concise guide to avoiding them.
Oh, at least I can answer your specific questions ...
IP addresses, netmasks, and routes are usually set in
init.d/network
DNS servers are listed in /etc/resolv.conf .
If you know what app is involved, you can get more information via the man
pages (the man page for an app usually lists its config files, and many
config files have their own man pages) and the HowTos (at www.linuxdoc.org,
for example).
PS. I'm adding the linux-newbie list back into this reply. I at least seem
able to post to it; I'm curious as to what your problem is. And maybe
someone else knows of a specific answer to your request.
