I don't know what effect this has. I don't have a line like this, I start
fetchmail like this: fetchmail -d 300
which runs it as a daemon in the background, and polls for new mail every
5 minutes.

Again, mine is:
poll pop.ne.mediaone.net with proto POP3
user "farinella" there with password "****" is chuk here
