A buzzword from the SNMP collection.
In SNMP there is aleast 2 communities defined, ussually called 'public' and
'private'. Basically you have a read-only community, which requires a
password to access (this is ussually referered to as 'public') and then you
have a read/write community, which requires a differant password to
access(this is ussually referered to as 'private').
This is supose to enchance security, one group can only read it, the other
group can write to it. Community, is more or less a group of users that
have certain access rights, the access rights are based on which community
they belong to. These both require a password.
The SNMP specs says that there only has to be 2 community, and I don't know
any vendors that add more than this.

Yea, you have to get both a client and server SNMP program. A SNMP 'server'
that runs on the Windows and Linux boxes, and a SNMP client to monitor them
(mrtg is a good program:
http://eestaff.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/mrtg/mrtg.html ). Most routers
have an SNMP server built in to as (and a few printers and switches do to!
: ) where you have to download and install SNMP servers for Windows and
Linux.
Check out this from the Linux Journal:

I want to get an SNMP server for my coffee pot, so I can monitor my daily
intake of caffiene : )
