If you are using gzip, you can't do it directly -- gzip compreses a file,
not a set of files. First you use tar to create an archive; tar itself can
invoke gzip. You do it with (approximately) this command:
tar -cvzf archive.name.gz /mnt/cdrom/doc/HOWTO/
