Yes. Your question can actually mean several different things, but I assume
you are asking about changing the userid (the name you enter at the "login"
prompt).

>For example if a user "A" is to be renamed to "B", what should be done?

Change userid "A" in /etc/passwd to "B". Make the same change in
/etc/shadow. If the user has an existing mail INBOX (probably
/var/spool/mail/A) that you want him or her to retain, change the file's
name from "A" to "B". You might find it convenient to change the name of his
or hr home directory to match the new userid, but that's not required ... if
you do do it, be sure to make the same change in /etc/passwd .

Of course ... under the new name. If you want him or her to continue
receiving mail under the old name as well, you can add an entry to
/etc/aliases, then run newaliases (or do whatever equivalant things your MTA
wants if you're not running sendmail).
