I am not a Linux guru although I think I have passed the newbie stage.
I have never bought a Linux book (except for, recently, an advanced
book on Linux programming) and learning everything I know from 
online sources (and, of course, this mailing list).

Here are some places to look:

The Installation and Getting Started Guide under LDP Manual is a good
place to start. Then read the Linux Network Administration Guide.


http://www.linuxstart.com/newbies/tutorials.html
A mixed salad of tutorials.


http://www.informit.com
Look around. I remember seeing a couple of Linux books available free
on-line.

I mostly print them out and read off-line. Of course, if what you want is 
a hard copy book,  it's something else.
