First let me give thanks to all of you. this list is such a god send!

Anyway, is there any services out there that act as a watch dog? I am
particularly interested in knowing when my nfs server goes down. Not that
it goes down on any sort of regular basis, but should it ever, i would
like to know via e-mail (I can send e-mail to my cell) Isn't technology
cool!! At any rate, I suppose I could write a shell script, but how would
I test this? Is there anything out there that does anything linke this?
