I'm writing this on a 486-100 with 16meg RAM, so I can
assure you that your Pentium will run Linux and X quite
nicely. However, you should avoid KDE, Gnome, StarOffice
and Netscape Communicator. They are very resource-hungry
and will make your computer crawl.
I suggest you use icewm for your window manager. It is
very lean/fast/stable and provides a ton of functionality.
As far as browsers go, Netscape 3.04 runs pretty well on
old hardware and a useable Opera is not far away. There's
also some hope that we will get a lean version of Mozilla
that will run well on old hardware.
Cheers,
Steven
