Read the Firewall HowTo (at
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Firewall-HOWTO.html) for the basics, including
use of ipfwadm (kernel 2.0.x) and ipchains (kernel 2.2.x) for firewalling.

There are a bunch of specialized, small Linux distributions that are
designed to turn old equipment (a 486/40 with 16 mB RAM, for example) into a
dedicated router/firewall. One such is Linux Router Project (LRP). Even if
you end up using a full-size Linux distribution, you'll benefit from looking
at this, or one of the others, to see how it's done.

Best URL to start looking is http://lrp.c0wz.com . Also look around for
Coyote (http://www.coyotelinux.com/coyote.html), Freesco
(http://www.freesco.org/), and several others (try the list at
http://kernelnotes.org/dist-index.html).
