before i start please excuse any typos i just got ten stiches in my
forarm a few days ago so i can only type with one,

my question is regarding connection process to internet,

i'm trying to connect my laptop to the network at my university via a
serial cable on ttyS0,

things are a bit complicated because there is no modem, but the network
uses pap auth just like a regular dial up connection

Ihave spent a great deal of time trying to get it to work, i have a null
modem cable which i think works good because when chat initiates the
modem it returns "ok"
but chat quites saying there is no dial tone,

But what i really want to know is how the authentification process takes
place,
here is an example of a regular connection over the modem
at what point in the connection process does the PAP take place, if I
knew that information i could bypass all arguments relevant to modem and
initiate a PAP exchange directly, I was told that the authentication
works exactly same for dial as for serial cable???
Thanks in advance
