you need to edit /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc comment out exec /usr/bin/gnome-session and put in a new line after it exec kde That makes kde the new X interface for all users if you are using $HOME/.xinitrc to control a particular users X interface then just make those changes in .xinitrc instead.
