Greetings:
I am trying to set up my Samba server v2.0.5a. I have been rerading
documentation for the past month, and I feel like I have some idea of what
is going on, but I am now at a point where I don't know what to do.
Before I tell you the problem, I want to let you know I have read the samba
articles at linuxnewbie.org as well as the article in the recent linux
magazine. I also own SAMS Teach Yourself Samba in 24 Hours, which I have
pretty much read twice.
Anyways. . . the good stuff
server: 486/75 16mb ram --slackware 7.0
compaq: amd 375 128mb ram --windows 98 as profile Jashu
My problem revolves around valid passwords. I have set up my server and
made sure that the samba/private/smbpasswd file contains the password for my
user, Jashu.
smbclient -L server -N reveils the following:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Added interface ip=192.168.42.1 bcast=192.168.42.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
Added interface ip=127.0.0.1 bcast=127.0.0.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
Domain=[MARRNET] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 2.0.5a]
When I try to connect to samba locally, I have no problems. I can log on as
root, as user bot, and as user jashu. When I try to log into the server
from compaq, however, I am told:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
YOU MUST SUPPLY A PASSWORD TO MAKE THIS CONNECTION
Resource: \\SERVER\IPC$
Password:
When I put in the correct password indicated in smbpasswd, I am told that it
is an invalid password. Confused, I decided that I would follow all the
steps in DIAGNOSIS.txt that came with the samba documentation. I was doing
great until Test Number 8. . . (surprise surprise, it was the first time I
moved onto the PC)
at the DOS prompt, I typed: "net view \\server" and recieved the following
error:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Error 86: The specified network password is not correct. Type the correct
password, or contact your system administrator for more information.
I have included the Test 8 text below. I do not know what to do at this
point. Does anyone happen to have any suggestions? I know that my network
connect works. I can ping each box, and I used IP forwarding to send this
email, so I know that works.
Please, and help is appriciated!!
TEST 8:
-------
On the PC type the command "net view \\BIGSERVER". You will need to do
this from within a "dos prompt" window. You should get back a list of
available shares on the server.
If you get a "network name not found" or similar error then netbios
name resolution is not working. This is usually caused by a problem in
nmbd. To overcome it you could do one of the following (you only need
to choose one of them):
- fixup the nmbd installation
- add the IP address of BIGSERVER to the "wins server" box in the
advanced tcp/ip setup on the PC.
- enable windows name resolution via DNS in the advanced section of
the tcp/ip setup
- add BIGSERVER to your lmhosts file on the PC.
If you get a "invalid network name" or "bad password error" then the
same fixes apply as they did for the "smbclient -L" test above. In
particular, make sure your "hosts allow" line is correct (see the man
pages)
Also, do not overlook that fact that when the workstation requests the
connection to the samba server it will attempt to connect using the
name with which you logged onto your Windows machine. You need to make
sure that an account exists on your Samba server with that exact same
name and password.
If you get "specified computer is not receiving requests" or similar
it probably means that the host is not contactable via tcp services.
Check to see if the host is running tcp wrappers, and if so add an entry in
the hosts.allow file for your client (or subnet, etc.)
