Hi,

As far as licensing goes...

Linux free as in free speech (check the GNU's website for the GPL)

Solaris free as in free beer. Solaris is actually free. You can't
download it but you can order a CD for $20 (Sun says that's
for packaging and postage, at any rate it's pretty cheap for
a very good OS). Sun also promised to release the code pretty soon
if they haven't done that already. It probably won't be GPL, but
it will available.

Running Solaris x86 was harder because of fewer drivers (tv card wasn't
supported) and some (a very few through) programs didn't compile on Solaris.

Solaris is still a nice OS. I know I shouldn't say this on a linux list
but, NIS+,NFS have better implementations on Sun.

The sun hardware is also nice, but they can run linux so that's a moot point.

At work/school we have a few solaris labs with sparc ultra 5, and left up
to me I would replace the whole overpriced lot with cheap intels running
linux. They are great machines, but sun's low-end workstations configurations
are, in my opinion way overpriced. The sun enterprise servers are great
though.
