My thanks for the many replies to my question. I am glad that my views on only being "superuser" when absolutely necessary found favour. By the way, my other system recently got a Microsoft Windows Word Macro virus. That could not have happened under Linux. I have formed the opinion that the UNIX/LINUX -rw-rw-rw- "permission" regime is more than a luxury. It is a necessity.
