Maybe you must edit something in /etc/conf.modules
there should be 'alias sound <your sound module>',
this command should there if you have done sndconfig ..
example alias sound cmpci -->> Cmedia c7388 sound card.
Or try to find the website, and recompile the kernel with the new
driver, that's the best way to make sound alright.
