I didn't see any other responses to this, perhaps because there is (I think)
no way to do it using standard Linux tools. If the diskless workstations
were themselves running Linux and connecting directly to the server, this
would be easy: you run lpd on the diskless workstation, and on the Linux
server, you add a printcap entry to print to the remote lpd daemon on the
diskless workstation. The details can get a bit tricky, but printing to
remote printers is a standard part of the lpr/lpd package.
But with Netware in the way, and no information about what you have running
on the diskless workstations themselves, I don't see a way to do what you
want. I'm not even clear on how you are making the connection. As I recall,
Netware 3.11 didn't include IP support, so I guess you have an IPX extension
(from Caldera, maybe?) added somehow to the RH 5.2 server. Or are you
running an IP add-in to Netware?
One possibliity, albeit a long shot: Back in the dark ages, there was a
(VT100, if I recall correctly) standard for connecting a printer to a
terminal, then using some escape squence to tell the terminal to redirect
input coming from the host to the printer port. I don't recall any printcap
support for such an approach, but you might want to look into whether that
sort of thing can be made to work ... it requires better-than-usual VT100
emulation on the workstastions as well.
If not, you probably have to do the printing through Netware. I'm not expert
in this, and I doubt if any of the other list regulars are either. You may
need to pose this question someplace where there is Netware expertise.
Or you might want to post a followup here, with some details about the
diskless workstations ... especially if they are running either Linux or
something else that can offer an lpd-style interface.
