If i remember correctly, i used 1024x768 with my S3.
What you need to do is use the 'xf86config' program, (note how its spelt.)
Save your origanal /etc/XF86Config file as it will be overwritten.
xf86config does Everything concerning configuration, but you MUST give the
correct answers to the questions you will be given.
It is also adviseable to have your monitor specs handy as well.
