Your mouse works in text mode just as it does in X, if it does not then
there is something wrong.
As to MC being it, i dont quite understand, you start an X server and run
programs "under X" use 'xf86config' to configure your system, it will ask
you all sorts of questions and create a XF86Config file for you.

There is plenty of documentation on your own system for X providing of
course you installed X and its development files.

/etc/X11 should have a symbolic link to whereever your type of distro has
placed them, in slackware its.

/var/X11R6/lib
