CRONTAB HELP

hi,
        Can someone please tell me how does one automate tasks using the
crontab . I did write a cron file , but I don't seem to get any
output.Why?

The file was just this

01 * * * * vasant echo "hi"

using the crontab -e command
but it doesn't work...
