As far as I know, every Ethernet driver ever made for Linux can load as a
module. If you know the module name and have a copy of it in
/lib/modules/*/* (where the first * becomes your kernel number), you can try
adding it by hand with

        modprobe module_name

(plus parameters, if it's a module that requires them) and see if the module
detects your card. 

I don't know what you mean by "load the ethernet card and then the network
drivers" if you see these as two separate steps ... they both mean the same
thing to me.

If you don't know what moduel you need, post again with more detail about
your setup, or consult the Ethernet HowTo at www.linuxdoc.org .
