Yes, I always tell it to make that link.

Ok. I just thought that it looked for a config file called X and didn't
find it.

Well, it is not a problem for me to execute xf86config again and again.
Whenever I do that, I get a link pointed to X having a name like
/etc/X11R6/bin/X11/XF86_VGA (or XF86_SVGA or something similar, not
quite sure at the moment, regarding what server I chose during
xf86config). Btw, how to be sure if I have video server(s) installed or
not? Is there any possibility that RH 6.1 haven't installed server(s)
after its setup did not recognized graphic card (or, even, if graphic
card is not supported at all)? On this one system where graphic card has
been detected properly, I suppose that video server(s) was(were)
installed by default. I am not used to rpm anything from a CD in text
mode.

Yep, I did the same (or adopt to my situation). It placed some things in
the PATH but I still haven't got anything but errors that I reported
earlier. Let me know more details about installing some 'generic' VGA
and SVGA servers that I could probe. How to install missing thing(s)
from a CD after the main installation is finished? I passed thru the
complete installation process several times (I made it in 'workstation'
and 'custom' way and it always reported that a graphic card was not
detected, or not able to detect and it was 'returning to a XF86_VGA16'
or something like that - I am not sure now).
