Howdy folks
Sorry for the cross-post, I've been working on this for several months
with no solution and need as many brain-pans as possible.
For some time now, I have been completely unable to log users into my RH6
box via telnet. Here are the details along with multiple tries at varying
solutions that didn't work.
RH 6 distro
When attempting to log users in via telnet I am able to enter the user name,
then I enter the password, then I get "Login incorrect" and I am given the
login prompt again.
This generates a message from LOGIN in the syslog that simply counts the
number of failed tries and gives the IP address.
The user shows up in both /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow, and the second field
in /etc/shadow is not all x's
All the profiles associated with bash appear to be set up correctly ie
.bashrc
.profile
.bash_profile
/etc/bashrc
/etc/profile
The line in inetd.conf that calls telnet appears to be normal
there are no /etc/usertty or /etc/.nologin files
Not only can I not determine what the problem is, I cannot determine where
it starts!
I thought about getty being the problem, but since it calls login
successfully, the blame should fall on login. The syslogs indicate that as
well, since the only messages generated are those from login. However, all
the login config files seem to be in working order.
One last little tidbit. If I am at the console, I am able to log any user
in. AND I am able to telnet to localhost and log in.
Any thoughts on this would be most appreciated, as would any solutions.

ps. I should point out that many of the things I have done to troubleshoot
this so far have been the suggestions af a few others. I don't want you to
think I'm smarter than I am and give me an answer that I won't understand.
:) Thanks again.
