An ipchain is a set of rules (like a series of "if" statements, if you're a
programmer) that the (2.2.x) kernel follows in deciding what to do with
packets that arrive on the system. The program "ipchains" is used to manage
the chains. The standard ones are INPUT, OUTPUT, and FORWARD, and it is
possible to create custom chains. "ipchains" replaces the "ipfwadm" program
and facility of 2.0.x kernels.

I think there is an Ipchains HowTo; I know the Firewall HowTo discusses
ipchains.
