The GUI way to setup X is to run
su -c xconfigurator, if you answer the questions truthfully you will not go
far wrong

When you install KDE and Gnome from 6.* .As you start you will always be
given an option of what GUI you would like to use, KDE seems to run its
startup interface (LOGON SCREEN) in preference to Gnomes one which in my
opinion looks poncey. When you install KDE it should always have that
log-on screen .
