There are freeks out there who monitor traffic on the net, then gather info
while seaching for words like passwd, login, etc, if one of those freeks got
hold of your passwd, need i say more.

If you want to monitor system logs via remote, then change permissions on
those files to your user account, that deletes the need to use root.

Another thing is if you want even to login to your system via remote use
ssh, its encrypted and makes life almost impossable for the hacker.
