Hi,

If you take GPL for GNU, check out LyX. This is by no means a "modest"
thingy, as a matter of fact it isn't a word processor at all in the
traditional meaning of the word, but rather a GUI for LaTeX (although LyX
is a bit more than that). LaTeX, in turn, is a macro package for TeX,
which is the greatest thing happened for document processing since
Gutenberg's days. There is Klyx for KDE, but it is unfinished and I
haven't seen much development for a long time, so i suggest you see
www.lyx.org.

For a more "wordish" approach, there is AbiWord (still version 0.7x, but
works), and a nice (stable) RTF editor Ted. However, I went for LaTeX
power.
