Let us get this strait, you have entered the above into /etc/hosts as
192.168.0.2 boxname 0
Where boxname is the name of the other computer.
You defined a "0" after the name correct,??
I belive that will simply not work as you think,
Doing, 'telnet boxname' will work, at least your system will try to reach
the remote host.
But, doing, 'telnet 0' as defined in /etc/hosts will result in you getting
an answer from "localhost".
At least thats what happens here.
A normall entry for /etc./hosts would be.
192.168.0.2 pc2 richard
Where the remote machine has a hosname of pc2
telnet 192.168.0.2
or
telnet richard
Should now work.
To make things clear, to configure eth0 for the 192.168.0.0 network.
ifconfig is used to up the card with 192.168.0.1
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.1 up
route add -net 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.0.0 eth0
Those are the bare encentials and should work.
