Which file do I edit...

...to set the default colour depth of the X server?

I've found that I can pass a command option to startx ( -- -bpp 32) which
does what I want but every time I restart the server it reverts to bpp 8.
I've also tried changing the order of the screen modes in the XF86Config
file, screens section.
