Corel-Linux is definately Debian based.  thanks for pointing that out.  

i was able to obtain the .deb for pine, however it must have had some
dependencies that are not installed on this machine.  not wanting to go dig
'that' deep i went another route.

i took a look at 'man rpm' and at the very beginning of this document is a
'WARNING re: do not use rpm unless you know exactly what you are doing.'
(obviously worded just for me?)  the user is then directed to utilize the
'alien' package that does come in .deb format.  i was successful in the
installation of Alien and used this to convert the .rpm over to the .deb,
everything is working as advertised.

] ld-linux.so.2 is the soname of the dynamic linker for the shared C
] runtime library glibc-2.  It is normally a symbolic link in /lib to
] /lib/ld-2.1.2.so or so.  In any case, it is part of the libc package,
