The computation goes as follows, IIRC:

load = 0;
for (i=0; i<= number_of_timeslices_per_second; i++)
        sum += processes_ready_to_run_for timeslice(i);
load = sum / number_of_timeslices_per_second;

This is the load for one second. The values displayed are averages over
1, 5, 15 minutes.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
