Hello! Would you please help me understand a detail about configuring Samba ? After (re)reading the whole documentation, I've tried a modification in setup. My network has COMPUTER1 (dual boot RedHat/Win98), COMPUTER2 (Win95) and COMPUTER3 (dual boot RedHat/Win98, but most on RedHat), connected in workgroup WORKGROUP. I've tried to set up COMPUTER3 as a WINS server (adding the 3 computers in /etc/lmhosts and setting wins support = yes on it). COMPUTER3 is also the Domain Master Browser (domain master = yes, local master = yes, preferred master = yes, os level = 65, without "wins server"). COMPUTER1 acts (in my intention) as a backup Domain Master Browser, for the case COMPUTER3 is down or in Windows. So I wrote on COMPUTER1 domain master = yes, local master = yes, preferred master = yes, os level = 33 - a bit lower, wins server = <computer3's IP>). Browsing works OK, but strange things happen, in my opinion: 1. As listed by "smbclient -L <anycomputer>", COMPUTER3 *never* become the Domain Master Browser (WORKGROUP contains "WORKGROUP" and MASTER lists "COMPUTER1"). If COMPUTER1 is down or in Windows, COMPUTER2 (which is Win95!!) becomes the Master against Samba! 2. COMPUTER3 keeps displaying error messages about incorrectly receiving UNICAST requests on its address and it tells that "those must be sent to WINS server". But COMPUTER3 *is* the WINS server! Please give me an answer to the following questions (supposing I understood OK the docs): 1. Is there any possibility to manually verify the correct functioning of a WINS server ? A kind of nslookup or something ... 2. Could you please explain why COMPUTER3 never wins the election? Of course, I've already proved other variants (setting COMPUTER1 as Local Master Browser or simple workstation), but it keeps happening... RedHat is 6.2, Samba is 2.0.6 (the rpm provided by distro).
