Thanks for the ideas but now I have to show just how new I am to
UNIX/LINUX.  I keep getting "permission denied" when I tried to type in
(I did change to su.):

#syslog.conf

I looked up the file owner and permissions and see the owner is "adm"
and permissions are "-rw-r-----".  I think I could figure out how to
change the owner and/or the permissions but that seems rather
inelegant.  There is surely a method that doesn't require tinkering with
such fundamental file characteristics.

I'm using kernel 2.2.14-15mdk.  There is no file  /etc/modules.conf  

As you may surmise; I am totally inept with this OS but I want to master
it and I appreciate your patience.
