Another way that you might approach this is to create a special group
associated with that directory (using mkgroup) and the files in it. Then you
simply make the user a member of that group in the /etc/group file.

I normally NEVER give anyone rights to anything else than what Linux finds
nessacary, however a way around your question without comprimising your
system is to copy those needed files to HIS /home dir and change
permissions for those files copied to HIS home dir to his user account.
mkdir /home/user/new_files_dir
cp -R /whatever/path/what/ever/files/ /home/user/new_files_dir
cp -R is recursive (be carefull).
chown -R user /home/user/new_files_dir/
Where "user" is the name of the account.
That way all permissions stay the same "except" what you change for that
user.
Of course there are more ways than one, this would be mine.
