>Hi, > >1>I have problem configuring my internal modem >"motorola SM56 PCI speakerphone modem" .Though the >modem works fine in "COM2" as in win98 , the same >fails when given as "/dev/ttys0 or /dev/ttys1 or >/dev/ttys2" for "/dev/modem" . I have tried in wvdial >and kppd ,the error is "modem is busy" or "modem is >not responding" I am sorry to tell that this modem won't work (at least for the time being) with Linux at all. I had one, and even in Windows it was terrible to mantain a connection. It is not a _real_ modem, but a winmodem, being controlled by software via Windozzzz. Maybe someone already reached a solution to this problem, but AFAIK, you should get a ISA modem. I use now a USR 56k V90 internal ISA modem with jumpers, so I can configure it to use a specific com/ttyS port. And to be sure, I don't enable "plug and play OS" in the BIOS. After that, the modem is as easy to configure in Linux as it is in Windozzzz. Maybe you should get a external modem, or be sure your modem will work in pure DOS/Linux (if they inform that in the box). If it is ISA and has jumpers, it is very probable it will work in Linux. The reason why this Motorola modems are so cheap is precisely this: they are not really modems. Most of the modems today are this sh*t Winmodems/Softmodems. For the answers, unfortunately, I have no answer. Maybe someone in the list can point you to the linuxmodems page. I don't have the URL right now. Good luck.
