Antes que hagas cualquier cosa te recomendaria revisar los logs del servidor x y ver que te sale y ver cual es el motivo por el cual no arranca para asi poder aconsejarte mejor. Si tienes xorg el log esta en /var/log/Xorg.0.log y si es Xfree 86 es algo parecido (comienza por Xfree si recuerdo bien)
