Java was made Open Source few days ago.. now the serious game is just
beggining ... Solaris is coming to desktop.. let's promote these free
platforms as a way to push Java ahead.

Microsoft play some bizarre business model and I have doubts if some
day JRE will really be part of Windows distribution...

Mozila is also free and it is a large part of the web consumers.

Let's focus in to promote Java on Linux/Solaris, on Mozilla, let's try
to offer the consumers a better choice... our only one chance to win
this battle against the MS monoculture :).

Well said David. These issues are not new and Alan's blog certainly isn't
the first to point them out. JRE deployment issues date as far back as
Java itself and one could argue that Flash was a response to Java Applets
and took advantage of these issues.

Yes Sun could have addressed these issues years ago, not taunted
Microsoft, built a visual tool for web designers, and MySpace and YouTube
would be using Applets instead of Flash today, etc. etc.

But rather than have more and more of us cry over spilt milk (glad to see
more though) we should take the initiative. It's not too late for Applets
to make a comeback is it?

Commandments on how to deploy a "open source" JRE? Break them. Leverage
the existing Java APIs and build the tools to make this happen (e.g. Java
Applets <=> JavaFX interoperability if need be) and let's build those
visual design tools.

Allow for pluggable protocols and codecs like has been done before with
Applets. But don't necessarily wait for Sun to do it (we've done that far
too long). Fork and fork often ;-)
