Hey amigo, leyendo en casi varios foros, todos indican que es problema del
archivo "xorg.conf" dale una hojeada a esto:
Type the following
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf_backup
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Scroll down to the label "Modules" then comment out using # the following
lines
Load "Dri"
Load "GLcore"
(if either or neither can be found then don't worry)
Scroll down and find the section called "Device". Make sure Driver="nvidia"
and not Driver="nv"
Directly after you see the line BusID "PCI;1:0:0" add the following
Option "RenderAccel" "On"
Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "DFP,TV"
Option "NoRenderExtension" "On"
Option "Accel" "On"
Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "Off"
Press down Ctrl+o then press the enter key
Press down Ctrl+X
type..
sudo reboot
"Este es un archivo xorg.conf original para una videocard de nvidia no
significa que sea igual". Talvez puedas ver en la seccion de Modules y
Device como indica lineas arriba.

Estimados Linuxeros,
Estoy ya unos dias con problemas de instalacion de ubuntu 11.04 de 64 bits.
Tengo una DELL XPS con los siguientes detalles :
Procesador Core i7
RAM : 6gb
Tarjeta Grafica : Nvidia 1GB
Pantalla LED : 17 pulg.
El problema es el siguiente, al instalar el ubuntu desde cero todo va bien
(es una particion dedicada ). Termina el proceso de instalacion y el ubuntu
inicia sin problemas. El tema es cuando quiero instalar el Driver
Propietario NVidia para habilitar el 3D, instalo el driver (nvidia
propietario), lo configuro en el xorg y todo parece estar bien, inclusive
veo el log Xorg.0.log y no sale ningun error. Ubuntu inicia sin problemas
incluso manda el sonidito de bienvenida peroooo... la pantalla esta oscura,
como si estuviera apagada, la maquina no esta colgada ojo, solamente la
pantalla se queda como apagada, intento cambiar de TTY y es posible ingresar
a las demas tty1,tty2 ejecutar comandos y todo.. pero el la pantalla sigue
oscura.. =/ .
Reinicie algunas veces en modo consola y manualmente hice el cambio de
niveles de init y al ejecutar el startx inicia el gnome pero obtengo los
mismos resultados de pantalla oscura =/ . Pareciera que no es la tarjeta
por q segun el Xorg.0.log dice que el driver carga bien, parece que el tema
va por reconocer la pantalla led de la laptop =S CRT ? DFP ?
Si alguien tiene alguna experencia en esto o comentario o sugerencia lo
agradeceria mucho... =)
