Check your CPU usage while you're doing the transfer. Often desktop chips (and probably even more so laptop chips) rely too much on the CPU and can't actually transfer enough packets to reach full network speed. You'll see your CPU sit close to 100% while transferring if this is the case. Without more detail it's hard to say, but if you're copying a file for example and your laptop disk is fragmented it could explain why you're only able to reach 5MB/sec. You could also try a benchmarking program like "ttcp" to send packets directly from RAM over the network, which will give you a much more accurate indication of how fast the network connection actually is.
