Many thanks for your help, Bryan. For the benefit of Google: the 5.1 is good for this system, the 5.5 didn't boot for me. The 2650 has a Perc3 (Adaptec aacraid) controller.
However, I didn't find the OMSA Live CD very helpful. For example the array tests failed, apparently because the RAID array spanned multiple disks and the diagnostics didn't recognise this; the memory test failed because no swap was enabled. I think what I'm really after is the Dell OpenManage Server Assistant CD, described at <http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/pe2650/en/ug/5g387c20.htm >. That allows the Utility partition to be created, and diagnostics to be run from there. Can anyone tell me the latest version of the Dell OpenManage Server Assistant CD which supports the 2650, please, and where to get it? Stroller.
